The Research and Exhibition Department of Archaeology, Medieval
History, and Modern History of the Region studies the history of Bukovina, Northern
Bessarabia, and Hertsa region from ancient times to the beginning of the XX century.
The department's research staff has created permanent
exhibitions: "Archaeology of the Region from Ancient Times to the Mid-XIV century," "History of the Region
during the Moldavian Principality and the Austrian Empire (Mid-XIV – Early XX century)," and a permanent exhibition "From
the Golden Treasury of the Local Lore Museum." In the exhibition halls of the
Department of Archaeology, Medieval History, and Modern History of the Region,
museum visitors are offered about two thousand original exhibits for viewing.
Among these are unique items: the oldest wind musical instruments in Eastern
Europe – so-called flutes; numerous artifacts of the Trypillian culture –
anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, ritual and table pottery; glassware
from the only glassmaking workshop outside the Roman Limes in Komariv; ancient
writing tools, the so-called styluses (pisala); a copy of the customs charter
of Moldavian hospodar Alexander the Good dated October 8, 1408, in which our
city is first mentioned by its own name – Chernivtsi; Moldavian warrior's
equipment from the XIV–XVI centuries; Polish "Winged Hussar"
armour from the XVIII
century; Russian, Turkish, and Austrian weapons from the first half of the XVIII century; a medal awarded to
representatives of Bukovina's home industries and crafts for their
participation in the Vienna World's Fair of 1873; a barrel made for an
industrial exhibition by the first barrel factory in Bukovina, Zayonchkovsky's,
in Chernivtsi; an original diploma of a Chernivtsi University graduate; a
working Austrian-era musical device – a mechanical music box with metal discs;
unique paintings by Augusta Kokhanovska, Yustyn Pihuliak, Mykola Ivasiuk, and
other Bukovinian artists.
The department's scholars work on creating (updating)
the department's exhibitions, permanent and traveling displays, and conduct
various interactive events and local history seminars. They regularly
participate in international and all-Ukrainian scientific seminars and
conferences. They are actively involved in research and scientific-educational
work. Their achievements include dozens of scientific reports, public lectures
and presentations on local history, television and radio interviews, and
publications in scientific journals and the press. The result of their research
work is the replenishment of the museum's collection with several thousand
exhibits.
