This division, extremely vital for the museum's operation, began its activities immediately after the Chernivtsi State Museum of History and Local Lore resumed its work, in accordance with the Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR of 1 August 1944. And already on 31 December 1944, the first permanent exhibition, 'The Great Patriotic War,' was opened to museum visitors, created through the joint efforts of museum researchers and the staff of the art workshop.
Creating an exhibition is a colossal task, involving virtually the entire team of museum staff; however, it is difficult to overstate the role of artists in this endeavor: as they are the ones who, working with the thematic structure, first develop sketches, and then, in accordance with the thematic and exhibition plans and sketches, create the exhibition itself. It is the artist who decides how best to display a particular museum object to the visitor without damaging it. Dioramas and models are created by the hands of museum artists, and museum objects are mounted on stands and in display cases.
It is worth noting that the exhibition of the Chernivtsi Museum of Local Lore, created in the 1950s, was long considered one of the best in Ukraine. However, over time it became morally and physically outdated, and thus was dismantled in the late 1980s. Since the mid-2000s, the museum has begun creating new exhibitions, on which both researchers and the museum's artist are working.
Museum artists also play an important role in the exhibition activities of museums.
Over the years, masters of their craft have worked in the art workshop: Ye. Nyegin, V. Korotenko, R. Lekalov. Currently, Valeriy Mykhailovych Hnatiuk works in the museum's art workshop.
