The Department of Scientific Collections is an important structural unit of the Chernivtsi Regional Museum of Local Lore. Currently, the collections of the Chernivtsi Regional Museum of Local Lore number over 122 thousand items in the main collection, as well as more than 7 thousand auxiliary items, divided into twenty storage groups. The collections include interesting examples of phaleristics, numismatics, old printed books and various types of documents, objects of local culture and everyday life, archaeological antiquities, works of art, weapons, jewellery, materials representing the flora and fauna of the region, topographic maps, photographs and video materials.

The department's staff carry out the registration, cataloguing, study, description, and preservation of exhibits and museum collections. In addition, researchers participate in the organisation of various exhibitions, seminars, round tables, and other events held within and outside the museum.
