Welcome to Chernivtsi Regional Museum – one of the largest and oldest museums in Chernivtsi region

We invite you to visit our exhibitions and displays to immerse yourself in the world of rich nature, archaeology, history, ethnography, and culture of diverse Bukovina. Our collection numbers over 120,000 exhibits, and every visitor will find something to their liking.

Interested in unsolved mysteries? Stop by the real skull of an Indian elephant. Its origin is still an unsolved detective story. And while you’re here, find out how these giants appeared in our region 400 years ago.

Here you can look into the jaws of Europe's largest predator – the brown bear. And marvel at the bizarre sea scorpion, which lived long before the dinosaurs.

Archaeology enthusiasts will be interested in the collections of artefacts from the region's ancient inhabitants. Among them are parts of mysterious Trypillian «binoculars» depicted on our museum's logo.

More fascinated by history? We exhibit a copy of the charter with the first written mention of Chernivtsi. And also a carved bed, made for Emperor Franz Joseph I. Appreciate the luxury that has reached us from the era of the Habsburg monarchy.

The region's affiliation with Rus'-Ukraine is commemorated by a stone sarcophagus with Rurikid symbols from chronicled Vasyliv on the Dniester. Try to unravel its mystery, which historians have been working on for over 50 years. Read the story inscribed on a 17th-century stone grave cross. Feel the tragedy of an era when the population of our region lived at the crossroads of Christian and Muslim worlds.

Are you an art connoisseur? Enjoy the sounds of an authentic 19th-century musical box. Admire the paintings of Augusta Kochanowska – the first female artist in Bukovina. Or marvel at the masterful carving on a unique episcopal chair.

Do you love numismatics or philately? Explore coins from different eras. Or examine a collection of authentic stamps with Ukrainian symbols from the early 20th century.

Need more inspiration? The museum preserves a vast collection of festive vyshyvankas with a unique variety of colours and patterns. Among them is a unique shirt with tryzuby and lions. Browse, photograph, and use ancient motifs in your own works.

Create with us! Be inspired by the atmosphere of Olha Kobylianska's residence, where the prominent Bukovinian finished her novel «Апостол черні». The air here is filled with her ideas of Ukrainian national struggle, progressive development, and feminism. And the objects still remember the writer's touch.

Delve into the works of Yuriy Fedkovych, whose name is borne by Chernivtsi National University. Walk through the memorial rooms where the renowned writer lived, created, and edited «Буковина» – the first Ukrainian newspaper in the region. Here, as an active member of the «Руська Бесіда» society, he initiated the creation of a student choir and led it.

Learn more about the «golden» and dark times of Bukovina, about the heroic and tragic pages of our history, feel the connection between generations, and observe the obvious parallels with the present.

Come and visit, the Regional Museum awaits you!
