The scientific staff of the nature department collect, study, preserve, popularise, and exhibit materials representing the geomorphological, landscape, and biotic features of the Chernivtsi region. Currently, the museum's natural history collections comprise over 7200 storage units. Their core consists of a herbarium, paleontological, entomological, malacological, nidological, and zoological collections, wet specimens of ray-finned fish, amphibians, and reptiles, as well as taxidermied birds and mammals.
The results of scientific research are regularly published in domestic and international academic and other publications, and department staff actively participate in various conferences, symposiums, and seminars. General and thematic excursions are conducted through the permanent exhibitions "Water: A Treasure We Neglect" and "The Animal World of Bukovyna".
The staff of the nature department also actively engage in scientific and educational work, primarily focusing on environmental protection activities. They conduct interactive excursions (e.g., "Tracks in the Snow", "Children of the Night", "Bat Night", "Flying Flowers"), excursions through the central part of Chernivtsi ("Parks and the Oldest Trees of Chernivtsi", "Botanical Natural Monuments of Chernivtsi"), overview lectures-stories (online lectures, public lectures, lecture series) ("Cat Day in Europe", "Why Should We Preserve Primroses?", "Amphibians: Life on the Edge of Two Elements", "Snakes of Bukovyna, or Fear Has Big Eyes", "Can You Eat Raw Russula Mushrooms?", "Early Sunday Morning I Dug for Herbs (Poisonous Plants of Bukovyna)"), master classes ("Pumpkin Lantern", "Embroidered Wonder", "Pumpkin Composition", "The Magical World of Pysanka", "Flying Flowers" (beaded butterflies), "Wonder Under the Microscope", and others), botanical and historical-ethnographic excursions ("Snowdrops" of Bukovyna", "Traditions and Beauty of Bukovynian Easter"), the anti-fake intellectual game "Racoon's Note", museum gatherings ("Traditions of Green Holidays in Bukovyna", and others), Spring and Ethnographic studies ("From Far-Off Lands, I Call the Birds", "Bukovynian Shirinka"), quizzes dedicated to "Migratory Bird Day" and quizzes "Live, Fir Tree!" etc. Such mass events attract significant interest, particularly from school and university students in the city and region, and museum visitors.
The nature department operates with the following staff: Head of Department – Candidate of Biological Sciences Ihor Vasyliovych SKILSKYI, leading research fellow – Candidate of Biological Sciences Nazar Anatoliiovych SMIRNOV, and leading research fellow – Candidate of Biological Sciences Tetiana Dmytrivna NYKYRSA. Museum attendants are Oleksandr Vasyliovych PLESHCHENKO and Tetiana Mykolaivna KOZAK.
